The stars of this series are our “tools” – the instruments. Audiences learn about them through authentic live performances by expert musicians. We shall be travelling the world. Children who attend the Saturday morning concerts and the subsequent instrumental demonstrations will encounter music and rarely seen instruments from different parts of the world. The indispensable ingredient of Columbian music is the drum. The tambora alegre and the tambora llamador are cup shaped drums of various siz...es, with one end open and the other covered with a membrane made from the stomach of either a calf, deer, goat or even alligator, which is stretched with wooden wedges. The musician plays with his hands. The gaita is a wind instrument used by native Columbian Indians, the pipe of which is made from a hollow cactus gourd, while the top is made from bee wax and duck feathers. There are two types: a female version (hembra) with five finger holes that plays the melody and the two-hole male (macho) version, which is used for accompaniment. It was originally used for cultic ceremonies but with the mixing of indigenous peoples with the Spanish and those of African origin, is has come to play an important role in the music of the Caribbean area. Our partner helping us realise this series is the Ethnosound world music shop.
