The stars of this series are our “tools” – the instruments. Audiences learn about them through authentic live performances by expert musicians. We shall be travelling the world. Children who attend the Saturday morning concerts and the subsequent instrumental demonstrations will encounter music and rarely seen instruments from different parts of the world. The sitar is an Indian string instrument originating in Persia. According to tradition it was invented in the 14th century by Amir Khusrav. ...Its name alludes to the three string sitar (the word literally means three strings) but over the years, the strings have been expanded to seven, along with between twelve and twenty additional strings that resonate, either freely (chikari) or partially (tarab). The large fingerboard has moveable frets, which allow the player to adjust according to the intervals of the melody. The bamboo flute, or bansuri, has six or seven holes and was the favourite instrument of Krishna. The very first detailed description dates from the time of the Bible but there are references to it in the Vedic hymns and we can regard it as the most ancient of the Indian instruments. Our partner helping us realise this series is the Ethnosound world music shop.
