The stars of this series are our “tools” – the instruments. Audiences learn about them through authentic live performances by expert musicians. We shall be travelling the world. Children who attend the Saturday morning concerts and the subsequent instrumental demonstrations will encounter music and rarely seen instruments from different parts of the world. The majority of native gamelan bands in Indonesia comprise of vertically suspended gong’s and turned groups of instruments hit with sticks. ...An example of this is the bonang, a collection of small gongs placed horizontally onto strings in a wooden frame. All of the kettles have a central boss. Other melodic percussion instruments of gamelan besides the bonang are types of xylophone (gambang kayu) and metallophones (instruments made from tuned metal bars). The longer melodies are played on a bamboo flute or on a string instrument called a rebab. Sometimes they are sung. The ensemble is kept together by a drum (kendang) which directs the playing. The complex polyphony of gamelan is of rhythmic origin. Each basic melody which consists of a few bars is balanced with a largely independent countermelody. The third group of instruments plays rhythmic variations of the theme, while the fourth fills the texture with complex rhythmic figures. Above this shimmering veil of sound hangs the human voice, or flute, or the unbroken melody of the rebab. In this concert programme, traditional gamelan music will be brought to life: classical dances, unique instruments and sounds – direct from the legendary Spice Islands. Our partner helping us realise this series is the Ethnosound world music shop.
