Woodwind instruments are an indispensable element of a symphony orchestra, whether played in chorus to reinforce the harmonies of the string section or as providers of melody in their own right. The woodwinds are the most varied section of the symphony orchestra. Even the name is misleading, given that some modern woodwind instruments are made of metal, such as the flute and its little sister, the piccolo. Flutes also differ from other members of the woodwind family, such as the clarinet, oboe a...nd bassoon, in that while sound in the latter is produced through the vibration of one or two slender reeds in the mouthpiece, the flutes and their relatives (such as the recorder) do not use reeds, but instead produce sound through the flow of air across the sharp edge of an opening.
