The string section of an orchestra comprises instruments whose sounds are produced by drawing a bow across the strings. Bowed stringed instruments – the violins, violas, cellos and double basses – provide the typical timbre of classical music and comprise the largest section of a symphony orchestra. The evolution of the violin and the other stringed instruments goes back to ancient times, and their modern form came about around the 15th century as the culmination of many centuries of development.... There has been virtually no change in their perfect proportions since that time. As Yehudi Menuhin once said, “If God, as they say, created man in His own image, then we can confidently state that man created the violin in his own image – or more precisely, in woman’s image, because the violin is a beautiful goddess.”
