The most lustrous instruments of the symphony orchestra, both in terms of their appearance and their sound, are those of the brass section. The trumpet, soft-toned French horn, slide trombone and growling tuba all add their own distinctive colour to the sound of the orchestra. Their most important common feature is that sound is produced in each through the vibration of the player’s lips through a conical mouthpiece. Different lengths of tubing are required to produce different pitches on each i...nstrument. In the case of the trombone, a telescopic slide has long been used to vary the length of the tubular resonator. For the other brass instruments, valves were fitted a little over a hundred years ago to increase or decrease the length of tubing through which sound is produced, thus allowing the pitch to be varied and melodies to be played as the musician desires.
