The stars of this series are the "tools” of music: its instruments. Children will get the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments in the context of authentic live music and with the assistance of expert musicians. In this semester, visitors to the series get the chance to meet the most populous family of instruments, getting a flavour of the colourful world of percussion.
The group of woodwind instruments is an essential element of the symphony orchestra, whether heard toge...ther, strengthening the harmonies played by the strings, or in a solo role as melody instruments on the same rank as the strings. The woodwinds are the most varied group of instruments in the symphony orchestra. The name is in truth misleading given that, of the woodwinds used today, both the flute and its little brother the piccolo are made of metal. Flutes also differ from the other members of the woodwind family, namely the clarinet, oboe and bassoon. With the latter, sound is produced through the vibration of one or two thin reeds housed in the mouthpiece, while the flutes and their relatives (for example the recorder) contain no reed in the mouthpiece, instead generating sound when air blown into the instrument vibrates on passing over a sharp edge.
