Harlem On My Mind

Changing people's lives through the art form classical ballet - this is the artistic mission of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. In the nearly half a century that has passed since the internationally acclaimed ensemble was established, it has lived up to this credo through its performances, its world-class dance school and its multi-faceted arts education programmes.

Now under the leadership of a second generation of artists inspired by Arthur Mitchell's vision - Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, a founding member and former prima ballerina, and Executive Director Anna Glass - the company is unmistakably moving toward its goals for the 21st century of building community and using the power of art to uplift and inspire. While continuing their commitment to the standard of excellence that has sustained them over the years, they are also dedicated to reaching new audiences with their message of self-reliance, self-expression and individual responsibility.
In the piece Brahms Variations, the court of the Sun King meets Harlem swag. In Equilibrium - Brotherhood, the importance of male bonding and its positive effect on men's lives is explored through physicality, athleticism and grace. Change - as the title suggests - is about refashioning traditional values and customs. Harlem on My Mind received its World Premiere by Dance Theatre of Harlem in September 2017, at the University of Wyoming.
