Three years ago, these same supreme ensembles celebrated the seventieth birthday of one of contemporary music’s best-known figures together, Steve Reich. Their programme presented “just” one Hungarian première, but at this evening’s concert, besides a Hungarian première and the cult hit Music for 18 Musicians – we will be treated to a world première. Reich has some Hungarian roots and composed a percussion quartet especially for the Amadinda Percussion Group on the occasion of their twenty-fifth... birthday. The Hungarian première of the Daniel Variations was sadly not inspired by a joyous event: it is a memorial to the journalist Daniel Pearl who was murdered in Pakistan in 2002 by Islamic fundamentalists. The text of the work derives from two lines from the Bible as well as words by the late Daniel Pearl. They provide the basic material for a characteristic Steve Reich piece in which the material undergoes an exciting transformation. Steve Reich is showing great respect for Amadinda and the other Hungarian musicians with his presence. Three years ago, he similarly attended the concert. He is not the only contemporary composer with whom the Kossuth Prize winning Amadinda share a working relationship: besides John Cage and György Kurtág, they also had a warm relationship with György Ligeti whose last completed composition was commissioned by the group and bears a dedication to them.
