Since it was formed in 1947, the orchestra has nurtured close relationships with living composers. Its sonority in romantic music evolved through its work with first Klemperer and George Széll and later Carlos Kleiber and Lorin Maazel and has worked with all the major 20th century conductors. The orchestra has an especially good relationship with Günter Wand with whom it made the legendary, prize winning series of recordings on CD and DVD of Bruckner’s music. Since 1997, the orchestra’s principal conductor has been Semyon Bychkov who this year is celebrating his fifty fifth birthday and today is also famous as an opera conductor. In 1975, he left his home city Leningrad, and soon afterwards conducted the New York Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. In the 1990s, he was appointed leader of such prestigious institutions as the Orchestre de Paris, the St Petersburg Philharmonic and the Dresden Semperoper. He has conducted the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne in recordings of symphonies by Shostakovich and Mahler, as well as Richard Strauss’s symphonic poems which we will hear tonight, in addition to two operas, Electra and Daphne. In this latter work, the lead soprano role was taken by the Salzburg born soprano Genia Kühmeier, who is still in her early thirties. She studied at the Vienna Music Academy with Marjana Lipovšek, and in 2002, won the International Mozart Competition. In 2003, the Vienna State Opera House awarded her the Eberhard Wächter Medal. In recent years, her international career has taken off: she has made her debut in many of the world’s great opera houses while as a concert artist, has worked with conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Riccardo Muti, Roger Norrington and Seiji Ozawa.
