Since it was founded in 1901, the Wagner Orchestra of Keio University has given more than 200 concerts. Former principal conductors have included the "father” of the orchestra, Atsushi Otsuka, as well as Fujio Nakayama, Hikotaro Yazaki and Naohiro Totsuka, while its activity is currently guided by Yoshinori Kawachi and Masahiko Okouchi. In 1996, the ensemble performed the world première of Lorin Maazel's A Pearl, a Girl with the composer conducting. The orchestra performs in both Japan and abroad with great success. Its last tour of Europe was in 2010, when it appeared in its favourite destination of Düsseldorf, as well as in Vienna, Brno and Budapest.
