Conductor: Domonkos Héja Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D major, op. 61 Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35 After winning prizes in Hungarian and international competitions, Vilmos Szabadi launched his international career in 1988 when he was invited by Sir Georg Solti and the London Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Bartók’s Violin Concerto at the Royal Festival Hall for a Bartók gala concert. In 1990, he performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and in 1992 with the BBC P...hilharmonic in Great Britain. That same year, he was chosen along with Rostropovich, Domingo and Kiri Te Kanawa to perform before the British royal family at Buckingham Palace in a concert celebrating Georg Solti’s eightieth birthday. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Music under Ferenc Halász, graduating in 1983 and a year later, became the youngest ever teacher there. In 1983, he made his first recording for the Hungaroton firm which was followed by a further forty. The MIDEM jury has twice awarded him the prize for the best recording, in 1999 and 2002, for his account of the two Dohnányi violin concertos and Bartók’s early sonata. He is close to the late Romantic violin school and has made numerous recordings of works and transcriptions by Sarasate, Heifetz, Ysaye, Jenő Hubay, Ferenc Vecsey and George Enescu. Vilmos Szabadi has recorded Tchaikovsky’s exceptionally melodic and popular Violin Concerto with the Danubia Symphony Orchestra which was formed in 1993 by the young Hungarian conductor Domonkos Héja from fellow students at the Conservatory in Budapest. They have made several recordings and been frequently praised for their youthful vigour. The concert will be preceded by a discussion entitled 'ForeWord', beginning at 18:30 in the Bartók Béla National Concert Hall, where people with a ticket for the performance in question can get acquainted with the performing artist and the works on show.
