In the early 20th century, the leading composers began to use increasingly surprising combinations of instruments which often were only used for a single piece. Other formations remained though, were further developed and even became the calling card of that composer. This was when the first experiments were made to burst out of the classical orchestral sonority that had become accustomed through a long line of masterpieces. According to Stravinsky, Ravel was influenced by his own Three Japan...ese Lyrics when writing his Mallarmé Songs. The exact replication of the scoring underlines this. The use of piano had by then won the right to exist in these kinds of ensembles, the precedent perhaps being Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. Schoenberg himself in 1906 was not yet at the point of introducing the piano to his score of the Chamber Symphony but it would probably have been superfluous, unable to add to the homophony and reduced to simply providing mottos. However, in his later period, small ensembles became typical for Schoenberg and include examples of piano and harmonium: certain parts of Gurrelieder can be successfully played using smaller apparatus with no harm done to the work. It seemed obvious for Schoenberg to make his students arrange Debussy’s early masterpiece, L’Apres midi d’un Faune for this formation, which is certainly no stranger to a slightly more expressionistic world of sonority.
