For decades, Ferenc Liszt's life was played out in public: From the kiss on the forehead from Beethoven that signalled the meteoric rise of his career to his complex love life. Liszt was truly one of the great personalities of his time. He was surrounded by admirers wherever he went and lived for his audience, whether he was perform-ing in a salon, a royal court or a crowded theatre. It is said he was possessed by the experience of hearing sound of Paganini, the Devil's violinist, as a 20 year o...ld. By the time he was 50, however, he had outgrown the pigeon-hole assigned to piano virtuosos and suffered a series of emotional blows. His son died in 1859, followed by his daughter in 1862, and his planned marriage in Rome in 1861 never took place. A desire grew in Liszt to withdraw into himself and await solace from above. He found inner peace at the Madonna del Rosario monastery, before receiving the minor orders of the Roman Catholic church aged 54. Childhood experiences may also have played their part in Liszt's development – his openness to religion and transcendence came in no small part from his father. Although Adam Liszt was released from the Franciscan order, he maintained close ties to the monastery and often took his son, christened Franciscus, to visit. If it was a virtuosity that appeared to defy the laws of physics that amazed audiences, Abbé Ferenc Liszt's introspective raises the listener to transcendental state that foreshadows many works of the 20th century. An emblematic piece of work from his earlier period is Totentanz, which contrasts with his later, aesthetically simplified Via Crucis. These two masterpieces, rarely heard in their solo versions, will be played by Gábor Csalog, a performer with a special feel for the unusual. Presented by the Palace of Arts
