The “bucolic tragedy” of Richard Strauss's Daphné, premièred in Dresden in 1938, was the most recent major challenge to be undertaken by the Hungarian National Philharmonic when it performed the opera for the first time at the 2010 Miskolc International Opera Festival with the internationally acclaimed Andrea Rost in the title role. A Budapest production has been a long time coming, the late-period Strauss opera has not been performed in the capital since the 1941-42 season of the Hungarian Stat...e Opera House – some 70 years ago. “The irrepressible and immaculately detailed beauty of the piece's progression from the explosion of Tristan's fiery passion to the denouement requires the hand of a genuine master and an extraordinary level of concentration. From Apollo's cosmically powerful seduction to Daphné's momentary, yet uncontrollably soaring release; followed by the merciless plunge back into tragedy and finally reconciliation with nature, he is able to weave a complex web of relations between five characters, all of whom are portrayed in depth and in all their emotional complexity,” wrote music critic János Malina after the Miskolc première.
