In 2009 music lovers the world over celebrate the 350th anniversary of Henry Purcell’s birthday – the Palace of Arts celebrates with a performance of The Fairy Queen. It contains some of the great English Baroque composer’s finest music and will be performed by some of the premiere Hungarian exponents of early music. The opera is based on Shakespeare’s comedy Midsummer Night’s Dream and is a so-called semi-opera, a stage work, which comprised of spoken episodes with song and dance numbers. Its w...orld première took place in May 1692 in London, at the Queens Theatre in Dorset Garden. György Vashegyi has for many years been researching Purcell’s works with the aid of his superb ensembles. He has already conducted a highly successful performance of Purcell’s only opera Dido and Aeneas at the Palace of Arts. The director on that occasion was also Csaba Káel. The two artists, as well as the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra have also collaborated on Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Charpentier’s Actéon, and in 2006, they celebrated the Mozart anniversary with a partially staged performance of The Magic Flute. Csaba Káel graduated as a film director from Károly Makk’s class at the College of Drama and Film but he also studied with István Szabó, Zoltán Fábry and György Illyés. In 2002 he made a film of Erkel’s Bánk Bán, which he also directed at the Budapest Opera House. For the role of narrator, Káel has invited the distinguished English actor Michael York who is familiar the world over as Tybalt in Zefirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, Brian Roberts in Cabaret and D’Artagnan in The Three Musketeers.
