Few people realise the true extent of Arnold Schoenberg’s artistic pedigree. Although his concerts were accompanied with scandal, he inspired Thomas Mann to write his most popular novel (although Schoenberg denied this), he was a superb painter who exhibited with Kandisky, wrote one of the most used and taught books on music theory despite being self taught as a musician and having studied counterpoint officially for only a couple of months. His most fundamental importance in music history is h...is pioneering and exploitation of the twelve-tone system of writing music. Despite his modernism, he was also inclined to look backwards and wrote arrangements of works by his great predecessors, for example chamber music by Brahms and organ music by Bach. This evening, we will hear his orchestral arrangement of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E flat major, which he wrote in 1928. Béla Bartók composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in the summer of 1945, while terminally ill. In his late works, he developed his own brand of classicism, expressing his thoughts simply, with a crystal clear clarity. He attained the heights of his great musical forefathers, transcending his era and yet representing it with the greatest of purity. Listening to his music, we hear the refinement of Mozart and the humanism of Beethoven. As is commonly known, Beethoven was initially inspired to write his Eroica Symphony by Napoleon’s personality. Yet the work is not really tribute to the general, who moved from hero to emperor to failure. Instead it expresses heroic fate and the ideals for which it is worth being a hero. And its mode of expression represented a quantum leap in symphonic writing and an architectural perfection, which Beethoven perhaps never surpassed.
