This is not the first time the phenomenal pianist Fazil Say has taken to the stage in Hungary, but we can be absolutely sure – from him more than from any other pianist – that we will always see and hear something we will not have heard before from anyone else. The 42-year-old Turkish pianist and composer both excites and divides audiences all around the world. There are some who regard him as simply arrogant, yet others find him irresistible. With his improvisations inserted into classical work...s and jazz-like transcriptions, we might even call him sacrilegious were it not for the profound musicality of his every movement. What is beyond doubt, however, is that his technical abilities are almost supernatural, representing the very highest level of virtuosity. Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, which premièred in 1931, is made to measure for a pianist of such versatility – it is among the works of the classical music repertoire to have been strongly influenced by jazz. The conductor of this concert will be Cristian Mandeal, who perfected his skills in the early part of his career under the leadership of von Karajan and Celibidache, later rising to musical director of Romania’s leading symphony orchestra, the George Enescu Philharmonic. Of Enescu’s works for orchestra, the richly neo-classical Suite No. 1 from 1903 is very rarely heard. By contrast, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is a frequently performed piece of the concert repertoire – thanks to its sumptuous orchestral palette and wonderfully rich melodies.
