Joseph Haydn premiered his oratorio The Creation in Vienna in 1798. The text, which is based on John Milton’s Paradise Lost was written by an English poet called Lindley which was then translated to German by none other than Baron von Swieten, who was a friend of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The oratorio comprises of 34 sections divided up into three parts. The first presents the first four days of the creation, the second looks at days five and six while the final part tells the story of A...dam and Eve. The three archangels, Gabriel (soprano), Uriel (tenor) and Rafael (bass) tell the story of the six days of creation in recitatives and arias, while the chorus praises God at the end of each day.
