Conductor: László Kovács J. S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue in G major, BWV 550 Böhm: “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele” – chorale partita Reger: Organ Sonata No. 2 in D minor op. 60 – 1st movement (improvisation) Thalben-Ball: Variations on a Theme by Paganini Bálint Karosi: Consonances – Essay for Orchestra and Organ (2006) – world premiere Parker: Concerto in E flat major for Organ and Orchestra, op. 55 – Hungarian premiere Bálint Karosi graduated from the Academy of Music in 2004 where ...he studied clarinet with Béla Kovács and organ with János Pálúr. Since 2003, he has studied in the United States with organist James David Christie. Since 2000, he has achieved successes in clarinet and organ competitions alike: for example in 2002 he came second in the clarinet competition at the Prague Spring Festival, a month later, he won the distinguished Dublin organ competition. He is also an active composer although he never studied composing officially. His teachers, he says, are the masterpieces of music. He also says his works are often complex compositions which attempt to create an effect through the spontaneity of improvisation and their penetrative power. Another work on this fascinating programme is a piece by Horatio Parker, an organ concerto written in 1902 by the man who earned a place in the history books as Charles Ives’s teacher. Besides German romantic style, Parker was also much influenced by Debussy’s sensitivity to colours. Another work of great curiosity value is the exceptionally virtuosic variations of a one time organist at the London Temple Church, George Thomas Thalben-Ball which demands a unique pedal technique from the performer.
