Conductor: Yoel Levi Featuring: Leon Fleisher – piano, Vincent Dubois – organ Berlioz: Benvenuto Cellini – overture Ravel: Piano Concerto in D major for left hand Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C minor (“Organ”), op. 78 The symphony orchestra from the Île de France region was founded in 1974 to bring music to this area inhabited by some ten million people. The Orchestre National d’Île de France, an ensemble of close to a hundred musicians between the ages of twenty and forty, has performe...d masterpieces from three centuries and has played or commissioned works from around a hundred contemporary composers. Chief conductor is Yoel Levi who was born in Romania and grew up in Israel. He made his reputation with his thirteen year stint as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, developing it into an orchestra of the first rank. He has now worked with all the world’s major orchestras and made many dozens of recordings. Maurice Ravel was commissioned to write the Piano Concerto in D major by his pianist friend who had lost his arm in the First World War. The soloist tonight will be Leon Fleisher who made his debut under Pierre Monteux with the New York Philharmonic at the age of sixteen. In 1952 he won the Brussels Queen Elisabeth Competition. Early in his career, he recorded the Beethoven and Brahms piano concertos with Georg Széll and the Cleveland Orchestra. In the nineteen sixties, his right hand was afflicted by a muscle disease and so instead he worked as a teacher, researcher, conductor, and not least, exponent of the surprisingly rich literature for left hand alone. Thanks to medical treatment, he now is able to play with his right hand again. Vincent Dubois was born in 1980 and at the age of eleven, became a student at the Saint Brieuc cathedral organ school. Five years later, he was appointed titular cathedral organist. In the meantime, he continued his studies, among others in Olivier Latry’s class at the Paris Conservatoire. In Calgary in 2002, he won the gold medal in the solo category, while he was awarded the Grand Prix in Toulouse at the international organ competitions.
