On November 7th, Hungary celebrates the 200th anniversary of Ferenc Erkel’s birth. Naturally, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra is contributing to the nationwide celebration of the composer, who founded Hungarian national opera and also wrote the Hungarian national anthem. They will be playing extracts from his operas, some of which are still performed in Hungary. These include the “prototype” of national opera, Mária Bátori (1840), László Hunyadi (1844), perhaps his finest opera Bán...k bán (which was filmed to great effect by Csaba Káel), the exciting but shaded György Dózsa (1867), Sarolta (1862), Nameless Heroes (1880) and the large scale György Brankovics (1874). Members of the Cluj Hungarian Opera and the Hungarian State Opera House will be performing with the Hungarian conductor Ádám Medveczky.
