St Petersburg native Mihail Agrest has appeared as conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre in Europe and also in the Far East and the United States. He regularly is asked to conduct leading Russian, German, Italian, Hong Kong and American orchestras and now comes to Budapest for the first time. The two Russian works on the programme were both originally written as operas but the composers did not have high hopes for performances which is why they both made concert pieces from them. The material of... Igor Stravinsky’s work is from the second and third act of his opera based on the Andersen tale, while Serge Prokofiev decided instead to freely use the materials of his opera “The Fiery Angel” to create not a concert suite but a four movement symphony. American composer John Adams is celebrating his sixtieth birthday in 2007. He composed Guide to Strange Places to a Dutch commission and it was premiered with the composer conducting by the Holland Philharmonic at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 2001. Travel and change of place is a recurring theme in Adam’s oeuvre, and this work is good example.
