The common denominator that links American Samuel Barber (1910–1981), German Richard Strauss (1864–1949) and Russian Piotr Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) is that all three wrote romantic music. Barber earned mixed reviews for this and in an interview in 1971, stated: “It is said I have no style at all, but that doesn’t matter. I just go on doing, as they say, my thing. I believe this takes a certain courage”. This concert gives music lovers a chance to hear Barber’s fresh, lively overture, The School f...or Scandal performed by the MR Symphonics. Richard Strauss composed melodic music all his life as well. At the age of 84, he composed his Four Last Songs. In them, he is still speaking the musical language of his youth, but expressing his ideas with great relaxation, wisdom and gentleness. Three of the four song texts (Spring, September, Going to Sleep), which deal with mortality, are by Hermann Hesse, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946. The fourth (In Twilight) is by the Romantic poet Eichendorff. The quote from the last movement gives us a good sense for the mood of Strauss’s orchestra song cycle: “We are so wander-weary – could this perchance be death?” In August 1888 Tchaikovsky finished his four-movement Symphony No. 5, which was the crown of his career to that point. In this composition, the composer presents a human portrait of someone capable of rising above and vanquishing solitude and destitution. The traditionally structured finale of the work resonates triumphantly with the startling power of transfiguration.
