“Felix Mendelssohn conducted the first 19th century performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the age of 20 in 1829, and began composing his oratorio St. Paul in 1834, primarily under the influence of Bach and Handel. The première of the work took place in 1836 in Düsseldorf and, in Mendelssohn’s lifetime, the popularity of St. Paul surpassed even that of the later, now better known Elijah. In this concert by the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, St. Paul will be presented ...for the first time in Hungary on period instruments. Almost exactly two years ago, we performed Elijah at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. It is my conviction that the use of contemporary instruments is of crucial significance in the case of Mendelssohn’s works. The translucent and richly nuanced sound that can be achieved in this way opens up new perspectives in the understanding of the score – for performer and listener alike.” (György Vashegyi)
