Conductor: Imre Kollár Soloist: Xaver Varnus – organ Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B minor (“Unfinished”), D. 759 Frigyes Hidas: Organ Concerto Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C minor (“Organ”), op. 78 The chief conductor of the MAV Symphony Orchestra since September 2008 has been Imre Kollár who in 1989 won the audience prize at the Hungarian Television International Conducting Competition when he was twenty. He graduated from the Budapest Academy of Music in 1992 and since then has been a su...ccessful performer in Hungary. For twelve years he was the first conductor of the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra and has been a guest conductor in most of the countries of Europe as well as in the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, Israel, Egypt and Mexico. Composer Frigyes Hidas who died in March 2007 composed his Organ Concerto in 1997 for Endre Virágh who sadly died before performing it. The work was then put to one side and forgotten about until Xaver Varnus happened to ask Hidas to write him a work that he could perform at the gala concert for the new organ at the Palace of Arts. This is how it came to receive its world première in 2006 in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, nine years after it was written. In Hidas’s work, the orchestra accompanies the organist while in the Symphony No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saëns, which he completed in 1886, the organ becomes an integral part of the orchestral sound. The work is also exceptional because the musical process is driven by thematic transformation. The majority of melodies in this more than half hour work are variants on the opening theme. Saint-Saëns learned this process from the symphonic poems of Franz Liszt, to whom the work is dedicated.
