Undoubtedly among the most influential figures in Russian music, Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) spent his entire artistic life attempting to unite the music of his homeland with European traditions to promote it as a shared cultural treasure. He was hugely successful even in his own lifetime, and history has recognised his remarkable talent to the full. Tchaikovsky wrote six symphonies, the first three of which were largely experimental, but the second trio are superlative masterpieces so unmistakably ...Romantic and irrefutably Russian that they cannot be confused with music from any other composer. Tchaikovsky's influence is strong throughout the Russian music of the 20th century, a time in which there were many very original and outstanding composers, such as Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. One of the stars of this generation is Rodion Shchedrin, a prolific composer born in 1932 with a host of symphonies, concertos and stage works to his name. He has close ties to Russian dance with all its rich history, not least because his wife since 1958 is world-famous ballerina Maya Plisetskaja. Shchredin composed his most popular work in 1967, a ballet suite based on Bizet's operatic masterpiece Carmen. Although he followed the opera closely, Shchredin uses Bizet's music as nothing more than the raw material for his own work, which is heavily adapted on the basis of his own re-imagining of the story and characters to satisfy the needs of a dance performance. As the music only features string and percussion instruments, it also represents a major challenge for the orchestra. Presented by: The MÁV Symphony Orchestra
