World-famous baroque musician William Christie makes his second appearance at the Palace of Arts. The conductor and harpsichordist was born in New York, but emigrated to France to avoid the Vietnam War draft. He founded Les Arts Florissants in 1979. The “arts in bloom” name was borrowed from the Marc-Antoine Charpantier opera and betrays a specialisation for French baroque music. Since the 1980s, the ensemble has released more than eighty recordings, including several works never been heard befo...re. William Christie has successfully dusted off a number of forgotten pieces of music, such as Jean-Baptiste Lully's Atys. Christie earned international acclaim when he performed the opera for the first time in 1986, more than 230 years after its original premier in 1753. Perhaps the ensemble's greatest contribution to music was its rediscovery of the work of Jean-Philippe Rameau. The group comprises or has comprised independent musicians Marc Minkowski, Christophe Rousset and Hervé Niquet, as well as successful solo singers Danielle de Niese and Paul Agnew. This concert will feature two Rameau actes de ballet (single-act operas), Pygmalion, debuted in 1748, and Anacréon, one of the composer's final works. Presented by the Palace of Arts
