From the 2010-2011 season, the series of events at the Palace of Arts dedicated to showcasing professional Hungarian orchestras will be known as “Symphonic Discoveries.” The concerts will place greater emphasis on raising the profile of Hungarian music which is rarely, if ever, performed. Based in Szombathely, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra will hold an evening of exclusively Hungarian works under the baton of 2011 Kossuth Prize-winning conductor Ádám Medveczky. It was on the advice of Arturo To...scanini that Zoltán Kodály rewrote his piano piece for orchestra, and the resulting arrangement of Dances of Marosszék has been performed worldwide ever since. Bartók's final completed work was his wonderfully uncluttered Piano Concerto No. 3, which will be played by István Lajkó. Perhaps the most interesting piece on the programme is Sándor Veress's Symphony No. 1, written in 1940. The composer learned composition from Kodály and piano from Bartók. A generation younger than his illustrious mentors, the teacher and folk music researcher is one of the forgotten figures of Hungarian music. Bartók employed him as his assistant at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, László Lajtha worked with him at the Museum of Ethnography, and Kodály appointed him head of the music composition department at the Academy of Music, where he taught György Ligeti and György Kurtág. However, Veress left Hungary to settle in Switzerland at the turn of 1949, where he established an esteemed school of composition and earned himself enormous acclaim. Hungarian music owes it to Veress to bring his outstanding work to a wider audience, and this concert will go some way to achieving this. Presented by: Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Palace of Arts
