György Vashegyi has become the leading figure of recent decades in the cult of Joseph Haydn in Hungary. He explores Haydn’s works with a scholarly striving for perfection, and the fruits of these labours are then enthusiastically presented by his passionate performers. At the head of his own ensembles, the Orfeo Orchestra and the Purcell Choir, he has been a constant participant for some 15 years in the Haydn festivals of period performance held at Fertőd-Eszterháza, where 80 of Haydn’s symphoni...es have been played in the same room in which the composer himself worked for decades. Vashegyi also often conducts orchestras that do not play on period instruments. Such collaborations, thanks to the conductor’s experience of historically informed performance, always have a productive influence on the musicians involved and are thus of particular interest to the audience as well.
