Of the nine symphonies by Ralph Vaughan Williams the earliest two are programme music: the first is dubbed A Sea Symphony, while the second carries the title of A London Symphony. The latter, composed in 1913, evokes the atmosphere of the city after which it is named, expressing the emotions of those who live within it. The individual movements are entitled London sleeps, Portrait of the Bloomsbury Quarter, Late evening sitting on the Temple embankment, and A glance at the city’s unsavoury point...s . The Epilogue paints a picture of London as a whole, while not shying away from showing the city’s shady side. Although Vaughan Williams composed the bulk of his work in the 20th century (he died in 1958 at the age of 86), we may still regard Benjamin Britten as the emblematic British composer of the century. His Spring Symphony – which was premièred in 1949 at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam – was dedicated to the conductor Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In the work, he used lines of verse by English poets of the 16th and 17th centuries – and one contemporary poet – relating to spring and nature. The composer exploits the possibilities offered by the genre of the choral symphony to blend singing voices into the symphonic form with unmatched ingenuity. In addition to a symphony orchestra, the work employs soloists, a mixed choir and a children’s choir.
