Of the great 20th century composers, several – among them Bartók, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov – were supreme pianists. Others, like Schoenberg, Berg or Webern, never performed on instrument publicly. In the case of Igor Stravinsky things are more complex. He was perfectly able to play the piano in public but did so only rarely, and would only perform his own works with the proper inducement. This was most often financial because he would make far more money if he added his composer’s fee to that o...f performer. While a young man, fifteen years before his Concerto for Piano and Winds, he played his four piano studies in St Petersburg but for years, he had not worked on his technique. So to be able to meet the exacting demands of this concerto, he spent several hours a day with Czerny’s finger exercises. The première was such a success that it was performed over forty times between 1924 and 1928. Then he decided to write a new concerto. Because he never issued opus numbers, he gave the new piece a different name: Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. Movements was written thirty years later when the elderly composer was no longer performing publicly. Instead he conducted. The concert’s soloist is Finnish musician Olli Mustonen who – like the conductor of this evening, Zoltán Kocsis – is not just a pianist but also conducts and composes. Fifteen years ago, he recorded these works with conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.
