This time, his programme is framed by two works from Maurice Ravel. Ravel originally wrote pieces for piano duet based on five stories from Charles Perrault’s collection but in 1912 created a version for orchestra that put the Mother Goose Suite on stage. In 1919, Diaghilev commissioned Ravel to write his dance poem La Valse but the choreographer was not impressed and so the ballet was not performed. The work became an instant hit in the concert hall, which was fair compensation for the composer. Richard Strauss wrote his first song at the age of six and over two hundred later, wrote the Four Last Songs at the age of eighty-six. With them, the German Lied tradition entered the 20th century although many of his most beautiful songs were written in the 19th century, in the second flowering of late Romanticism. We shall hear five of these, alongside two by Gustav Mahler. Revelge (“Alarm”) is one of the twelve songs that Mahler set from Des Knabens Wunderhorn collection. The second song, Um Mitternacht (“At Midnight”) sets a verse by Friedrich Rückert. The songs by Strauss and Mahler will be sung by Szabolcs Brickner, who was a winner at the 2008 Brussels Queen Elisabeth International Singing Competition. Giuseppe Martucci (1856–1909) originally wrote his Notturno for piano, and its title suggests Chopin, but musically it is not the Polish master but rather Wagner whom Martucci emulates. This quiet meditative piece has long been highly popular in Italy but is relatively rarely heard elsewhere.
