Conductor: János Kovács Featuring: Beatrix Fodor, Annamária Kovács, Mihály Kálmándi – vocals, Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal) Johannes Brahms: Tragic Overture, op. 81 Alto Rhapsody, op. 53 German Requiem, op. 45 This evening’s selection of works by Johannes Brahms does not promise easy entertainment. All three compositions are characterised by a seriousness and darkness of tone, but each provides the opportunity for a cathartic experience. The Tragic Overture – act...ually written in tandem with the upbeat Academic Festival Overture – very much conforms to Brahms’s rather melancholic disposition. The Alto Rhapsody for alto solo, male choir and orchestra was composed in 1870 and is a setting of Goethe’s Winter Journey over the Harz Mountains, the sorrowful young hero of which, meandering along the aimless roads, is a characteristic figure from romantic literature. Many details of the rhapsody link it to the German Requiem which certain scholars have argued was inspired by grief for the passing of his friend and supporter Robert Schumann. Others believe it was inspired by the death of his mother. The seven movements summarise thoughts about death with beautiful logic and philosophical transcendence. The conductor of tonight’s concert is János Kovács, the acting music director of the Hungarian State Opera House, while the soloists are similarly familiar figures on its stage: the young soprano Beatrix Fodor is a member of the opera studio, Annamária Kovács and Mihály Kálmándi are soloists.
