George Enescu is one of those composers whose works – with a few exceptions – struggle to gain a place in the symphonic repertoire. The Hungarian National Philharmonic, however, has always strived to play its part in repaying artistic debts. The orchestra’s connection to the music of Enescu – who emigrated to France from Romania and was also hugely influential as a violinist and teacher – derives from its participation, under the baton of Zoltán Kocsis, in the Enescu Festival in Bucharest in 201...1. Among the guest ensembles at that festival was Portugal’s Gulbenkian Orchestra, conducted by Lawrence Foster, who has done perhaps more than anyone else to popularize Enescu’s symphonic works on the international stage. The Symphony No. 3 to be heard in the second half of this concert was written in 1918 when the composer was 37 years old, and is scored unusually for orchestra, piano and chorus. This rarely heard work will be preceded by a performance of one of the most frequently played piano concertos in the repertoire, whose beauty nevertheless remains undiminished. The evening’s soloist Cristina Ortiz burst onto the international music scene when she won the gold medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 1969. The London-based Brazilian pianist studied in Paris, before perfecting her skills as a student of Rudolf Serkin at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music.
