Founded 140 years ago, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra may not have the history or prestige of the city's Staatskapelle, but its exceptional musical standards are guaranteed to attract some of the finest conductors in the world today. The list of musical directors of recent decades is impressive: Carl Schuricht, Kurt Masur, Michel Plasson and Marek Janowski. Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos has occupied the position since 2004. American conductor John Axelrod was born in 1966 and has served as music...al director and conductor at L'Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire since 2009. At the Palace of Arts, he will lead the Dresden Philharmonic through a selection of music rooted in 19th century Germany. Liszt composed his symphonic interpretation of Hamlet – sadly, a work that is rarely performed – in Wiemar in the early 1860s, while Brahms wrote his Double Concerto in 1887 for Joseph Joachim, the driving force behind the Berlin music scene, and his world-renowned cellist friend Robert Hausmann. Born in the Saxon city of Zwickau in 1841, Robert Schumann was among the few composers of his age who dared explore the genre exalted by Beethoven. Mendelssohn also introduced his Symphony No. 1 in the state of Saxony, some 100 kilometres from Dresden in Leipzig. The average age of the soloists is 32 years. Both musicians play Stradivarius instruments and have one German parent and one from the Far East. Viviane Hagner has already performed with celebrated conductors Daniel Barenboim, Kent Nagano, Claudio Abbado and Zubin Mehta. Opposite her, Danjulo Ishizaka studied at the Berlin Academy of Music and has already completed a full tour with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.
