Conductor: Gábor Hollerung Featuring: Budapest Academic Choir Society (choirmaster: Ildikó Balassa), MR Choir (choirmaster: Kálmán Strausz), Honvéd Male Choir (choirmaster: Péter Drucker), brass players of the MR Symphonics Handel: Dixit Dominus, HWV 232 (1707) William Walton: Belshazzar’s Feast – oratorio (1931) The Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok has launched a remarkable concert series in partnership with the MR Music Groups, the Budapest Academic Choir Society and the Honvéd Male Choir. The e...nsembles have tremendous experiences and traditions in the field of oratorio music and undertaken to perform works in which huge choral forces are required. Friedrich Handel composed three grand scale Latin language masses in 1707, during his first residence in Rome, among them his setting of the psalm beginning Dixit Dominus. This virtuosic and popular work which derives its text from Psalm 110, is performed in the first of the opening concert of the series by the Budapest Academic Choir Society and the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok. In the second half, three choirs and two orchestras combine to give an account of Sir William Walton (1902–1983) the English composer and conductor’s immense oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast. According to the book of Daniel, famine and economic collapse characterised the end of King Belshazzar’s reign in Babylon. Belshazzar holds one last feast when he sees a disembodied hand which suddenly writes the words Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin (or Peres) on the wall. “This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians” (Daniel 5:26–28). This immense work for double chorus, giant orchestra and two external orchestras is rarely heard in Hungary and so its performance is one of the highlights of the year.
