Led by András Deák since 1991, the ensemble will be playing Franz Liszt’s famous paraphrase of the Dies Irae melody for piano and orchestra, as well as some lesser-known delights. The Danube Symphony Orchestra commissioned Zoltán Kovács to compose his work Vae victis! (“Woe to the vanquished”) which is an expanded and re-orchestrated version of his earlier composition for twelve cellos, Knights of the Round Table. The composer uses a large orchestra expanded with percussion and an orchestral pia...no. It is a series of variations with an introduction and the march theme heard distantly at the beginning, becomes increasingly more as we reach the apocalyptic climax of the work. According to Zoltán Kovács the work is an expression of his respect for the music of Shostakovich. The best-known work by Mexican Silvestre Revueltas was composed in 1937 but has been rediscovered in recent decades. Sensemayá is a setting of a verse by Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén and sets Afro-Cuban songs, which were used at ritual snake killing ceremonies. The woodwind instruments play an important role in the piece as do the powerfully asymmetrical rhythms, which has led to the work being described as a relative of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 4 is rarely heard in the concert hall in Hungary. It was premièred in 1874 with Smetana conducting. Many passages reveal the composer’s recent encounter with Wagner’s music, particularly Tannhäuser.
