The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra performs at the Palace of Arts as part of “In the Heart of Europe” exchange programme, which also involves the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and ensembles from four other Central-European cities – Bratislava, Ljubljana, Prague and Vienna. The Czech ensemble has a long history, giving its first concert in 1896 at the Prague Rudolfinum with Antonín Dvořák conducting. In its long history, Zdeněk Mácal is the tenth man to occupy the role of principal cond...uctor, which he has done since autumn 2003. At the orchestra’s two concerts, they will perform two first symphonies. Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) composed all six of his symphonies during his years in America. When he arrived in the United States, fleeing the Germans who were threatening France, where he had lived, his old friend Serge Koussevitzky, the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, commissioned a symphony from him. The conductor asked the composer to dedicate it to the memory of his recently deceased wife, Natalie. Gustav Mahler premièred his Symphony No. 1 in Budapest on November 20th 1889. 1888 to 1891 he was the director of the Hungarian Royal Opera House and it was only natural to première his new work in the Hungarian capital. We will now hear how the Czech Philharmonic interprets the work here.
