Like all artists of his generation, Liszt was profoundly influenced by Faust, the story of a man who makes a pact with the devil in pursuit of unlimited knowledge. It was on the basis of Goethe's play that he composed a major symphony in the 1850s, while he wrote two movements in 1860 inspired by a version of the classic legend by German author Nikolaus Lenau (1802–1850). His aim was not to express the intellectual message, but to record two scenes in music for posterity. The first, The Night Pr...ocession, describes the nocturnal meeting of Faust and the pilgrims, while the second, Dance in the Village Inn, is a toe-curling waltz, in the course of which Mephistopheles enchants the girl with whom Faust falls madly in love. The latter became popular as a piano piece entitled Mephisto Waltz. The conflict of body and soul, of light and dark was a theme even in Liszt's earliest work. One example is Malédiction, a fantasy for strings and piano only discovered after the composer's death. The piece received its title from the annotation assigned to the solo section in the manuscript. Mahler's Symphony No. 5 has no programme and takes on the guise of a traditional symphony – without soloists or a choir. The opening funeral march, the famous Adagietto composed as a romantic gift for his wife Alma, and the lavish final movement were not immediately understood by Mahler's peers. Following the first performance of the work, Mahler is reputed to have said, “I wish I could conduct the first performance fifty years after my death.” Presented by: Concerto Budapest
