The history of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is synonymous with the history of Chinese symphonic music. Beginning in the 1920s, conducted by an Italian, they developed two main areas of repertoire: Chinese contemporary national music and European classical music. They have now given their ten thousandth performance and played in the Carnegie Hall and the Berlin Philharmonic. They will be conducted by Muhai Tang who was born to a musical family and after graduating in Shanghai, undertook fu...rther studies in Munich. His international career began to take off when he was invited by Herbert von Karajan to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1983-84 season. He led the Dutch Royal Philharmonic between 1991 and 1995 and made his debut overseas with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1988. Since 2006 he has been artistic director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. He is a keen conductor of contemporary music for which he has won the 2002 Grammy Prize for the best contemporary recording of the year. At the Palace of Arts he will be conducting 20th century Russian and Chinese contemporary compositions. Yuan Liu is one of the leading Chinese composers from the middle generation, and today lives in Shanghai. Tan Dun has lived in the United States since the 1980s. One of his operas was premièred at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 2006 with Placido Domingo in the title role. The evening’s soloist is probably the youngest person to ever record one of the hardest works in the piano literature: Chopin’s 24 studies. Although born in Switzerland, Mélodie Zhao is of Chinese descent and will only have just celebrated her sixteenth birthday when she performs at this concert. She has a brilliant technique and already tremendous concert giving experience. She began her studies before she was three at the Beijing Central Music Academy: her career and personality is still developing but one thing is for sure: we shall be hearing from her.
