The Calvinist Songs concert, organised annually since 2002, is the largest musical celebration of the Calvinist church in the Carpathian Basin. The event is held to allow hymns and songs used in the church to recorded by professional musicians for sale on CD and DVD. Now numbering 350 members, the Carpathian Basin United Calvinist Choir is responsible for bringing a wealth of excellent chorusmasters, soloists, chamber choirs and organists to the series. Year on year, the event attracts more inte...rnational music lovers in addition to the local protestant congregation. The audience frequently sings together with the choir to make a total of 1,700 worshippers singing in unison. In addition to the Debrecen Kántus Choir, the Imre Palló Choral Society, Psalterium Hungaricum, the SDG Choir, FIRESZ, and the Partium Christian University Mixed Choir, new groups are added to the Calvinist Songs series every year. Of the chorusmasters who have taken part, it is worth highlighting the names of Sándor Berkesi, János Arany, Zsófia Cseri, Tamás Bódiss, and Péter Hoppál, while each of the eight organists who have appeared on the CDs released to date are worthy of mention: János Pálúr, Csilla Alföldy-Boruss, László Fassang, László Draskóczy, Antal Kéménczy, László Varga and Virágh András Gábor. Soloists have included Boglárka Berkesi, István Basky and Gyöngyi Écsi, while The Cantores Ecclesiae Brass Ensemble has added colour to the series since 2007. In the eight years of the series to date, 164 Calvinist hymns and songs have been recorded on nine albums. Some of the songs are gathered into a single track for use in services and to allow them to be sung and studied in schools. Others are performed individually to be presented and preserved as choral masterpieces. The organisers are delighted to report that the first and second Calvinist Songs (Református Énekek) have gone platinum, while the third, fourth and fifth are golden platters – and there are many more of the 512 songs in the hymn book still to be recorded.
