This concert features two classic 20th century Russian works, preceded by a brand-new Estonian piece. Conductor Paavo Järvi is today a celebrated guest at the world's major concert halls who goes to great lengths to showcase Estonian music. His Budapest concerts will be no different, kicking off with the piece Sow the Wind, written by his countryman and old friend Erkki-Sven Tüür for the 80th birthday of Arvo Pärt. This will be followed by world-famous Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk's p...erformance of Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2 in G minor. Shostakovich wrote this work, considered a cornerstone of 20th century cello music, during the spring of 1966, dedicating it, just as he had done with his first cello concerto, to Mstislav Rostropovich. The concerto, which exhibits the distinctive style of the mature Shostakovich, was given its première that same year at a concert held in Moscow to mark the composer's 60th birthday.
Sergei Prokofiev composed his Symphony No. 6 in 1947 as his monument to the tragedy of World War II. The composer meant the idea underlying his work as a warning, in the euphoria of a great victory, against forgetting those wounds that cannot be healed. Despite earning positive reviews, Prokofiev's symphony fell afoul of the 1948 Zhdanov decrees, which led to condemnation of the composer for writing a work out of line with Party doctrine. The piece only found its way into the concert repertoire after Stalin (and Prokofiev himself) had died.
