Following its première in 1820, Carl Maria von Weber‘s work Der Freischütz conquered audiences in opera houses in numerous German cities that same year. Regarded as a standard work of the German Romantic opera repertoire, the work had a fruitful influence on many other composers of the period, among them the young Richard Wagner.
Contrary to Weber's opera, the première of 26-year-old Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 was anything but successful, initially failing as the audience ...of the Leipzig Gewandhaus struggled to grasp the Brahms style. It is possible that, in the shadow of Liszt's piano concertos, the composer's musical idiom seemed rather grey and puritan. The story had a happy ending, however, as Brahms brushed this failure aside comparatively easily, and within a few years would go on to witness the concerto's success and growing popularity.
Sergei Prokofiev wrote his Symphony No. 5 within scarcely a month as the end of war approached in 1944. 'I thought of it as a work glorifying the human spirit, a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit,” he wrote. "I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression.' The tone of the work, reflecting on the current state of the world, is solemn and exalted. The world première in Moscow in 1945 was conducted by the composer himself.
