The extraordinarily popular Polovtsian Dances are a ballet interlude from Borodin’s unfinished opera Prince Igor, heard in the finale of the work’s third act, but often played as a stand-alone concert piece for orchestra. Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 spent many years in gestation. The composer had already noted down the theme to be later developed in one section of the first movement as early as 1911, while he wrote the finale in 1921, using material from an unfinished movement of a string q...uartet. The première in Chicago was conducted by Frederick Stock, with the composer himself as soloist. “Music is not an empty play with sounds, it should always have a programme at a higher level of interpretation,” wrote Tchaikovsky to Nadezhda von Meck in a letter dated 1878, in which he shared the secret programme of his Symphony No. 4 with his patron. He did the same with his Symphony No. 5. On the other hand, he wrote to his nephew of his Symphony No. 6, which he originally considered calling the Programme Symphony, so “its programme should remain a mystery to everyone – let them rack their brains over it.” His last symphony is a worthy swan song, as the composer died a few weeks after the première in 1893.
