In Mozart’s career, 1775 was the year of violin concertos: within barely a few months, he wrote five such works. "The violin concertos occupy a very special place in Mozart’s oeuvre. They were created by a self-confident composer at times overflowing with youthful energy, making his way sometimes with gentle enthusiasm, sometimes with unbridled high spirits, and playing a merry game with the form," wrote Hermann Abert in his classic biography of Mozart. The leader of the Concert de la Loge Oly...mpique, an orchestra that employed the best French musicians and enjoyed the support of Queen Marie Antoinette, ordered six symphonies from Haydn in 1784. This commission led to the creation of the so-called "Paris symphonies" (No. 82-87), among which “The Bear” received its nickname due to the low growling sound on the strings in the opening of the last movement. Mussorgsky was lauded by contemporaries as a pianist of exceptional skills, but despite this he barely composed for the piano, his true medium being vocal music. An exception to this is his major piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition, written in 1874, which was inspired by the works of his unexpectedly deceased friend Viktor Hartmann, a painter, architect and stage designer. Thanks to Maurice Ravel’s decorative and colourful arrangement, the work became one of the most frequently performed and successful pieces in the orchestral concert repertoire. At the age of 18 in 1985, Leonidas Kavakos won the Sibelius Competition, following this up with first prize at the Paganini Competition three years later. A regularly invited guest of the world’s leading orchestras, his play is characterised by an analytical approach and exceptional virtuosity. He plays the Abergavenny Stradivarius from 1724.
