In 1949, at the age of 42 and at the peak of his creative period in Hungary, Sándor Veress, one of the finest and most internationally renowned representatives of Hungarian music since Béla Bartók, emigrated to Switzerland for political reasons, where he continued to both compose and teach. His orchestral work Threnos was written to commemorate Bartók. Chopin‘s works for piano and orchestra fall within the first period of his career, among them his two piano concertos. Despite its numbering, th...e Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor was in reality completed before the composer’s E-minor concerto, between autumn 1829 and the beginning of 1830. It was premièred on 17 March 1830 at the National Theatre in Warsaw, with the solo part naturally played by the composer himself. In 1937, at the time he completed his orchestration of the Brahms work to be heard here, Arnold Schoenberg had already been living and working for some time in America. In a letter written in 1939 to Alfred Frankenstein, a critic from the San Francisco Chronicle, he explained why he had rearranged the Brahms work: “I like the piece. It is seldom played. It is always very badly played because the better the pianist, the louder he plays and you hear nothing from the strings. I wanted for once to hear everything, and this I achieved.” The pianist Maria João Pires is one of the most significant musical personalities of her generation. Born in Lisbon in July 1944, she studied music in Portugal and then Germany. Since 1970 she has engaged in examining the effects of art on life, community, education and nurturing, seeking out new avenues in the teaching of music. Presented by: Budapest Festival Orchestra
