While already a popular composer in his homeland, international recognition for Dvořák came with the publication of the first series of his Slavonic Dances in 1878. With its variety, exuberant joie de vivre and exoticism, the series swept critics off their feet and launched the composer on a global career that same year, enchanting audiences from Prague to London, and then on to Boston. A Cinderella-like fate awaited Dvořák’s only piano concerto, which – unlike his cello and violin concertos –... remains a rarely performed piece to this day. Several attempts were made to “rescue” the piece, with two great Czech pianists, Vilém Kurz and later Rudolf Firkušný, endeavouring to retouch and accentuate the piano part. It was Sviatoslav Richter, however, who rehabilitated and popularised the original version, which is now beginning to take its rightful place in concert halls. Dvořák composed Legends in 1881, originally as a series for piano duet dedicated to the Prague-born Eduard Hanslick, a mutual friend of Brahms who became the most influential music critic in Vienna. The composer began to write his Symphony No. 8 at the peak of his artistic powers in his beloved country retreat in Vysoká in August 1889. The outline was completed in just two and a half weeks, and the work finished by 8 November that same year. Garrick Ohlsson is regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation and is particularly acclaimed as an expert interpreter of the works of Chopin. He has an extraordinarily broad repertoire, ranging from Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert right up to the music of the 21st century. Presented by: Budapest Festival Orchestra, Palace of Arts
