The young Shostakovich had a penchant for attending the concerts of jazz musicians in Russia, then still very rare. From the 1920s onwards Soviet ideologues increasingly regarded the genre as a bourgeois relic, viewing it with suspicion accordingly. In 1934, Shostakovich accepted membership to the committee charged with raising the standard of jazz as a genre. This provided him with the opportunity to compose his first Jazz Suite, which was followed in 1938 by a second written for the newly form...ed State Jazz Orchestra. Leonard Bernstein wrote his five-movement Serenade in 1954 based on Plato’s Symposium, a dialogue on the theme of love. Bernstein follows the structure of Plato’s dialogue, conveying the work’s inherent arguments and emotional content. The most prominent instrument in what is one of its composer’s most elegant orchestral works is the solo violin; essentially the piece amounts to a “violin concerto in disguise.” Liza Ferschtman plays both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, but also holds her own concerts on the main stages around the world. In 2006 she received the Netherlands Music Prize. She regularly performs with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, and with many prominent conductors, including Christoph von Dohnanyi, Claus Peter Flor, Neeme Järvi, Yakov Kreizberg or Jaap van Zweden. Since 2007, she has been the artistic director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival. Rachmaninoff dedicated his Symphony No. 2 to Sergei Taneyev, and conducted the première of the work himself in Saint Petersburg in 1908. After the catastrophic failure of his first symphony, Rachmaninoff was plagued with doubts over his own abilities as a composer; however, the second symphony brought the hoped-for success and restored the composer’s self-confidence. The concert of 12 January is made possible with the support of Fidelio.
