The power which Maeterlinck’s drama Pelléas et Mélisande exerted over his contemporaries is apparent in the inspiration which it provided at the turn of the century to four composers of the calibre of Fauré, Debussy, Schoenberg and Sibelius. Gabriel Fauré wrote incidental music for the London production of Maeterlinck’s play in 1898. The composer himself conducted the première, and for a long time the work was regarded as a “prerequisite prop” for performances of Pelléas et Mélisande. The orches...tral suite in four movements was constructed from the material of the original theatre music. Francis Poulenc wrote only four concertos, all of them for keyboard instruments. The neo-classical style of his early concerto for harpsichord, completed in 1928/29 and dedicated to Wanda Landowska, also characterizes the brilliant concerto he wrote for two pianos and orchestra. Besides the obvious Classical inspiration of the work, and above all of Mozart, we also hear the influence of contemporaries, 19th century predecessors, jazz and the sounds of faraway, exotic lands, here and there mingling with chords evoking the world of the French music hall. Although his works do not belong in the mainstream concert repertoire, Albert Roussel remains a significant figure in music history. His early compositions betray the influence of Debussy and Ravel. Among his teachers we find Vincent d’Indy, and among his pupils Erik Satie, Edgard Varèse and Bohuslav Martinů. His music blends the most diverse influences from impressionism to jazz, while his Symphony No. 3 is a fine example of his later neoclassical style.
